Dear Colleague, I hope by now you are aware of the TUC demonstration taking place in London on 18 October: Britain Needs A Pay Rise. On that day tens of thousands of people will take to the streets of London to tell our politicians that enough is enough, that ordinary people won’t stand by as their living standards continue to decline. This event is part of our wider campaign to combat the Government’s radical austerity agenda, their determination to strangle public sector pay and their ideological attack on public services. It takes place at a time when many of our members are involved in industrial action, fighting collectively for fair pay. As with previous national demonstrations, UNISON is taking a leading role with coordinating the event and I am writing to you because we need all activists and branches to play their part. I am always blown away by your response, and that of our members, when called to act. Ever since the ConDem Coalition came to power in 2010, our union has been at the forefront of opposition to their damaging and divisive policies. Your work in 2011 organising for the March For The Alternative and the Pensions Strike, and again in 2012 and 2013 for the national demonstrations The March For A Future That Works and NHS999, has been impassioned and inspiring. That is why I’m asking you to all play your part and start to organise and mobilise our members, our colleagues, our family and friends, to join the demonstration on October 18. Britain Needs A Pay Rise is another huge step towards our push to achieve the positive changes we so desperately want and need in our society. And with a General Election in sight in 2015 it’s even more vital that we deliver a huge message to our politicians about how people are feeling in Britain today. Yours sincerely Phil Wood Regional Secretary: UNISON South East Comments are closed.
