Please find below an update on the current situation regarding the NJC Pay Dispute. Please note that members of the West Berkshire Council Local Government Branch are NOT taking part in strike action in respect of the NJC pay dispute. The reason for this is that for many years now we have not been covered directly by the NJC pay award mechanism which West Berkshire Council does not wish to be formally bound by, but neither do we have a formal local pay agreement. The situation for many years now is that West Berkshire Council undertakes to match the NJC pay award once agreed and has always done so thus far. You will have probably noticed that you were not balloted on the NJC pay award national action and this is because UNISON's legal advice is that taking part in a national dispute where the NJC pay award mechanism is no longer formally recognised would be a breach of employment legislation and would put members here at risk. MEMBERS SHOULD THEREFORE WORK AS USUAL on national strike days but we can still show support for striking colleagues elsewhere by sending messages of support, writing to the press and emailing councillors and MPs to put the case for a fair pay award. The branch executive fully supports the aims of the national strike and will be encouraging members to join the TUC march and rally planned for October. ![]()
